New Credit Card Scam - VISA / MasterCard - Posted 3/14/2011
How the scam works:
1. The fraudster will contact you and claim to be from the Security/Fraud Department of VISA or MasterCard calling about a bogus flagged purchase on your account.
2. The caller will try to appear legitimate by providing you with their badge number, your mailing address, your card number and even refer you to the 1-800 number on the back of your card.
3. The caller will then ask you if you made the flagged purchase and after you say ‘No’, the caller will state the credit card company will be issuing a credit to your account.
4. After gaining your trust, the fraudster will attempt to “verify†you still possess the card by asking for your 3-digit PIN number.
5. The fraudster will end the call and then use the PIN to make unauthorized purchases on your account.
Tip: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with your credit card company, hang up and call the 1-800 number on the back of your credit and verify the call.
Alert! Automated Hoax Phone Calls From Banks - Posted 7/8/10
Several citizens in SCP today reported receiving automated message calls purporting to be from a local bank. The recorded message advises the resident that their debit cards have been cancelled. The message further goes on to ask the customer to give or punch in their card number in order to have the card reinstated.
These calls are yet another version of a scam which attempts to get your account number so that funds can be misappropriated from you. The caller ID numbers even appear to be from a local number and bank, but are not.
You should never give any type of account numbers to anyone who contacts you first. If you have any doubts, hang up, verify your bank's phone number from an independant source, and then call your banking officer.
